How do I complete my DBS application?

Summary

One of the main checks when starting work within the regulated industry is your criminal background check, better known as a DBS check. This guidance will show you how to complete your DBS application. 

When your employer requests a DBS check, you will be notified. After creating your account with llama.id you will be able to see your DBS check in your checks requested section under your employer. 

 

What stops me initially from completing my DBS application?

  • You will need to complete your right to work and ID checks first. This ensures your identity is valid before we can allow you to complete your DBS application form. You can check how to complete your right to work check here
  • If you have uploaded a DBS certificate for your employer to review, this will also stop you from completing a new DBS form. You will need to ask for the employer to reject your DBS uploaded certificate as this will show the DBS check as pending until your organisation has made a decision. 

How to complete my DBS application?

  • When you have completed your right to work check and the status is "Completed" the DBS application will show as "Get started"

  • The first question you will be asked, is if you have an existing DBS on the Update Service. If you are click "I'm on the Update Service" and follow this guidance
  • If you need a DBS check click "I need a DBS". This will take you to the main application form. 
  • You must consent to the relevant legislation
  • You will then enter your personal information. Its important to add all your middles names!

  • You then will need to add your birth information
  • The next step will be to enter any previous known names. This is a big trend in applications being delayed. Please ensure you add all your known names (marriage, name change etc)

  • You will then need to upload documents for your DBS ID verification
  • You need to upload 3 of these types of documents
  • Follow this guidance of what documents to use to speed up the process

  • You then will need to enter your current address 
  • If this doesn't meet 5 years you will be asked to enter more addresses until we have enough addresses. You can follow helpful tips for address history here

  • You then need to declare your unspent convictions. If you know you have unspent convictions you need to tick this
  • You also then need to declare the information is correct and submit this. 
  • This will then be sent to your employer to cross reference and send to the DBS Update Service
