Right to Work Document Examples UK

On this page you will find examples of the documents you need to obtain to prove a person's right to work status if they are a British Citizen. 

Please note: All right to work documents need to be in a person's current name. If the documents are not in the person's current name then a name change document will need to be obtained. These can include:

  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Overseas marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Deed poll certificate

 

UK passports

Obtaining a UK passport is the easiest way to prove a person's right to work. This can also be used as a form of photo ID.

When looking at a UK passport you need to be careful and make sure you look at the nationality. Some people have a UK passport but under nationality is can say any of the following:

  • British citizenship - Does not require a share code
  • British overseas territories citizen - Requires a share code
  • British overseas citizen - Requires a share code
  • British subject - Requires a share code
  • British national (overseas) - Requires a share code
  • British protected person - Requires a share code

Irish Passports

An Irish passport can also be used to prove a person has right to work in the UK. This can also be used as photo ID.

UK birth certificates

A UK birth certificate can be used along side a National Insurance document to prove a person has right to work in the UK. Over the years there have been many different birth certificate designs released. There are also two types of birth certificates, a full certificate and a short birth certificate. 

 

Short birth certificates are issued after birth and only include the following information:

  • Full name (including middle names)
  • Place and date of birth
  • Sex
  • Place of birth

Full birth certificates include the following information:

  • Full name (including middle names)
  • Place and date of birth
  • Sex
  • Place of birth
  • Name and occupation of of parent(s)
  • Mothers maiden name

Irish birth certificate

Irish birth certificates paired with an NI document can also be used as evidence that a person has the right to work in the UK. There are also a few designs of Irish passports. Please see below for an example:
